These domain names can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Existing 3rd-level domain names remained online.
